Below is a picture of Japanese cops bothering foreigners who were trying to leave Japan at Narita airport.
For every foreigner looking person that passed by the Jap cops were asking all polite. “Papers Please”
This is the type of phenomenal police work that Japanese cops like to spend their time on.

When Japanese cops arrest someone they often use harsh interrogation methods that are probably illegal in other democracies to extract forced confessions.
The incompetent Japanese cops that let Tatsuya Ichihashi accused killer of Briton Lindsay Ann Hawker slip through their fingers for years are now pouring on the pressure trying to get a confession. Ichihashi’s lawyers criticized the practice stating that “a prosecutor had told the suspect during a grilling that he could be hanged for the 2007 murder of Briton Lindsay Ann Hawker.” The lawyers also said Ichihashi told them Chiba Prefectural Police investigators said he was causing trouble for his family by remaining silent.
Sounds like Japanese cops will say anything to try and get that confession.

Below is a picture of a built Gundam Strike Freedom model that is suspended from the ceiling. This model is from the Gundam Seed Destiny series that ran a few years ago.

According to Asahi.com a Japanese governement study found, “A record 972 students, from elementary school age through university level,” took their own lives in 2008.
According to the government study, “children victimized by bullies often committed suicide. One suicide sometimes triggered more suicides among their peers.”
The conclusions the study came up with are brilliant. It’s a dirty little fact of Japanese culture where extreme bullying or “Ijime” is allowed to occur mercilessly in schools and the work place. Living in Japan you’ll see a news article or two every month about a kid somewhere who kills themselves. Bullying happens everywhere but Jap bullying is more ruthless and subtle. People who stand out for whatever reason are mercilessly tormented overtly and indirectly. It’s the Jap way.
“To address the issue, the report called for the creation of a framework which would give children easy access to someone with whom they could discuss their concerns.”
What a waste of time bullying is part of Japanese culture and has been since the beginning probably.
What’s interesting is foreigners or Gaijin are for the most part outside of this vicious cycle of bullying unless they end up in a traditional Japanese company. I think any gaijin parent thinking of sending their kids to a Japanese public school will have to think about what kind of bullying their child may encounter.

Internships are good way to gain real world experience. Maybe you just graduated and need some real world experience?? Of course you might be willing to work for cheap maybe even minimum wage because you lack the experience, but would you be willing to work for $10 a day?
That’s the deal according to a recent job posting on Gaijinpot.
Forum poster Tomoko the tapeworm has posted a parody of this great opportunity to the Expat Japan forums have a look.

If you see Japanese cops just standing around at any major station and you look foreign be prepared to be suddenly asked for your passport or foreigner registration card (gaijin card).
Are you part of the pure Yamato race? No then these cops are making sure you gaijin foreigners aren’t causing trouble.
Is this Nazi Germany?? No its Japan but they can still get away with it “Papers Please” the Jap cops will ask all polite.
Can you imagine cops in the States demanding to see the papers of any Arab looking person they feel like?? Nope not even after 9/11.
It’s pretty offensive but there’s pretty much nothing you can do about it.
Below are pictures of Jap cops I saw asking every foreigner looking person for their passport or gaijin card as they walked by.

Interesting thread on the Expat Japan Forum that talks about how Gaijinpot is censoring threads that speculate GEOS will be the next large Eikaiwa English School to go under.
The reason for these rumors is in August/September 2009 GEOS staff were being paid late and the details were being discussed in a few Japanese message boards.
When NOVA was about to implode Gaijinpot censored all topics about the impending NOVA collapse right up until they really did fold.
The forum posters on Expat Japan are pointing out how Gaijinpot is “up to their old tricks”.
I think it would suck pretty bad to get a job with GEOS and then have them suddenly go belly up.
