I have a copy of Half Life 2 installed as part of the Orange Box package Valve offers. This copy is not installed through Steam.
When I set the screen resolution to 1600×1200 the screen blacked out and I got the error Out of Range on the screen. Outside of the game there is nothing you can use to reset the resolution easily. This set up is very short sighted and very inconvenient .
You will be able to hear the game but not see it. Uninstalling and reinstalling the game does not fix the problem.
If you google the issue most of the answers on the various forums are worthless and do not work.
After experimenting on my own I did find a fix.
1) Go to Start –> Run and type regedit
2) You have to edit a registry key. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER –> Software –> Valve –>Source–>hl2–>Settings
Delete the Settings folder
3) Relaunch Half Life 2 and the game will launch normally
